Event 155: Rear of Park Plaza Hotel – A Santa Special!

On Saturday morning (9 December) a large number of Santas — one riding a monstrous duck, rather than the traditional reindeer — took time out from their busy pre-Christmas schedule to clean up the dock feeder canal at the rear of the Park Plaza hotel on Greyfriars Street.

Between them they collected a staggering haul of rubbish:

  • 1 tipper-truck full of green bags
  • 20 ‘blue’ waste bags of hard plastic for recycling by Terracycle
  • A variety of metal work
  • 6m of plastic pipe
  • 5 orange cones
  • 1 yellow ‘Police’ cone
  • 40 syringes and needles
  • A wash basin
  • 5 sq.metres of plastic sheet
  • A patio chair
  • 2 buckets, one full of dried cement
  • 2 suitcases
  • A blanket
  • A discarded ‘Superdry’ coat
  • 1 shopping basket on wheels
  • A fishing rod
  • Assorted bread crates
  • Loads of cut bicycle locks
  • Around 15 credit/debit cards (all well out of date)

Assorted Santas

This was the first time that Cardiff Rivers Group joined the marine litter recycling programme with partners Keep Wales Tidy, Cardiff Council and Terracycle. Volunteers separated all rigid plastics into blue bags, so it could be recycled into new shampoo and washing-up liquid bottles as part of a partnership with Procter & Gamble.

Group member, Louise Tambini, said, “We love our annual Christmas clean-up. The volunteers enjoy spreading some festive cheer as they don their Santa hats and chat to Xmas shoppers as they clean up. We are really pleased that we are the first Cardiff group to join the marine plastic recycling efforts in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy and Terracycle. It is really important that plastics are removed from the marine environment so they don’t harm wildlife, but also that they are recycled into new products so helping the circular economy. We hope that more groups join this fight across Wales and join the fight to Clean our Seas

We are grateful to our partners in Park Plaza who provided a lovely slap-up meal for all volunteers on this cold day!” she added.

After the event, the Park Plaza Hotel very kindly laid on a superb buffet for the volunteer Santas — many thanks to Margaret Waters and Rajesh Ganeshan of the Park Plaza Hotel.

Our thanks to Cardiff Council and TerraCycle for removing all the rubbish collected.
