Event 156: The Boardwalk , Cardiff Bay (30/12/2017)

On Saturday, 30 December, 33 volunteers battled with howling winds on Cardiff Rivers Group’s last clean-up of 2017 to collect litter and waste from the area behind Ice Arena Wales and under the boardwalk along the Bay’s edge.

This is our first event to start cleaning up the Bay in preparation for the prestigious Volvo Round the World Yacht Race  that will be visiting Cardiff in May/June 2018.

Lots of bags of rubbish

Together the team collected 53 bags of rubbish, car wheels, cones and miscellaneous metal objects. They also collected 24 bags of plastic for recycling by TerraCycle, who turn it into new shampoo and washing up liquid bottles — a great example of partnership between volunteers, Cardiff Council, Keep Wales Tidy and the private sector for the benefit of the environment.

Two volunteers found £15 in cash

As an added bonus, two volunteers found £15 in cash!  All-in-all, it was a very successful event to end 2017.

Group Committee member, Louise Tambini, said, “Yet again I am amazed by the number of volunteers who have given up their time on a very blustery day to clean up Cardiff for everyone to enjoy. We have even found some money and recruited 3 new volunteers today, so it has been a very successful event indeed! I hope that 2018 brings us even more success — what better way to start the year than making a resolution to volunteer to improve your own environment. We can all make a difference.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, partners, funders and supporters for their help in 2017, and wish you all a very happy, healthy and tidy New Year!” she added.

The waste was collected by Cardiff Council for disposal and recycling.
