The experienced volunteers joined local residents for 3 hours on Saturday 5th November for their 1st clean up of the wharf.  They donned waders to remove rubbish from the canal and tackled the deeper waters of the wharf using grappling hooks and a dinghy.
Together, they collected tonnes of rubbish from the area including;  a moped, 8 bicycles, numerous scaffolding poles, 9 trolleys, fencing, a set of golf clubs, 40ft long plastic pipe, 9 bags of rubbish, 6 bags of recycling, a dead rat and dead fox!
All rubbish will be collected by Cardiff County Council’s Parks Department.  Volunteers were rewarded by the Holiday Inn Express who kindly provided refreshments at the end of the hard day’s work.
Ceri Hughes from Cardiff Rivers Group said, “Considering the area looked relatively clean when we arrived, we got a huge haul of scrap metal, bikes and more shopping trollies than you would find in the average supermarket! It was great to have such positive feedback from the residents who saw us working. A good morning’s work!”
Chairman of Atlantic Wharf Residents’ Association, Neil James, said, “Atlantic Wharf is very popular with local people, but it was long overdue a clean-up.  We were pleased to welcome Cardiff Rivers Group to Atlantic Wharf for the first time and very grateful for their efforts.  The Group’s volunteers worked really hard all morning and collected an interesting hoard of rubbish from the Wharf!”

Karen Matthews, Manager of Holiday Inn Express, Cardiff Bay added, “Thanks to everyone who came along to help keep the wharf area clean and beautiful.”
