Cardiff Rivers Group do their bit for Tidy Wales Week

As part of the annual Tidy Wales Week, Cardiff Rivers Group tackled the feeder channel that flows from the River Taff at Blackweir through to Atlantic Wharf.
Pics can be seen here. At the bequest of Associated British Ports (ABP) who control the flow of water to the docks, the volunteers worked downstream from Tyndal Street to clear rubbish that had built up over years along with invasive plants and bushes (especially the butterfly bush; buddleia) that was in danger of blocking the channel.Check out a new video CRG in action here!

16 volunteers donned waders and boots, saws and grappling hooks for 3 hours to clear three large transit van loads of rubbish and plant material. The rubbish included 2 lorry tyres, plastic sheeting, remains of a TV, 260kg of scrap, a duvet, 8 or so bags rubbish, 12 large traffic cones and a blow up sheep!
Dave King of Cardiff Rivers Group commented “There is a lot of talk about partnership working but this was a great example of it in practice in Cardiff. The private sector; ABP, working with the voluntary sector; Cardiff Rivers Group, and the local authority though Cardiff Council Parks Services, supported by European Metal Recycling worked together to really make a difference”. “I hope we can do more with our partners and show other organisations across Cardiff that such collaborations do work.  Many thanks to ABP for the generous financial donation they made to our group, Parks Services for their continuing support in collecting and disposing of the waste, and to European Metal Recycling for accepting and recycling the scrap metal found” he added.
Cardiff Rivers Group are truly grateful for all the hard work of its volunteers and partners, and to thank them they are holding a FREE social event on Fri 26th October. The CRG Oktoberfest will take place in Llandaff Rugby Club at 7.30pm and all volunteers are very welcome.
Cardiff Rivers Group formed in 2009 as part of the ‘Tidy Towns’ project: a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Welsh local authorities. Funded by the Welsh Government it supports the people of Wales to improve the quality of their local environment.
