Event 148: Melingriffith Feeder Stream, Forest Farm (24 June 2017)

Before we got stuck in to clearing the Melingriffith feeder stream, building dead hedges and pulling up Himalayan Balsam, we were incredibly happy to be presented with a cheque for £2,996.23 by Mark Poole of Viridor — the recycling, renewable energy and waste management company — who came along to the event with a colleague. (They both pitched in volunteering afterwards, too!)

The grant, which comes from the  Viridor & Prosiect Gwyrdd Community Fund, will be used to buy a small boat, to enable CRG to do even more work to help keep Cardiff’s waterways clean and beautiful.

We started clearing out the Melingriffith feeder stream almost two years ago, in August 2015.  Given how choked with trees the stream has become, it’s definitely a long-term ‘habitat management’ project, but we’re definitely making a difference.

Removing trees from the stream greatly improves the flow, which in turn helps keep the stream  clean and should result in more fish living in it.  And more fish means that the local kingfishers and herons will visit the stream more often.

The huge number of  branches removed were then used to extend the ‘dead hedge’ that we started building along the bank of the stream two years ago (which has survived surprisingly well).

The dead hedge will stop dogs from further eroding the banks of the stream.

As well as removing trees from the stream, volunteers pulled up swathes of Himalayan balsam along the banks of the stream, which should help to control its spread a bit.

Finally, contrary to whatever Mr Hackett might say, it was only a very small branch that might have hit him on the head.

Event 147: Pre-Champions League Clean-Up (27 May 2017)

35 volunteers, 2 kayakers (and 6 dogs) took part in a clean-up of the River Taff and surrounding area through the city centre yesterday in preparation for the thousands of visitors that are expected to the capital city next weekend for the Champions League final.

The team split up to clean the area from Castle Street bridge right up to Blackweir.  Some donned waders to remove rubbish from the river itself, whilst others tackled litter in overhanging branches from their kayaks.

One team headed north to the fields near Blackweir where they found hundreds of bottles, disposable BBQs and cans that had been discarded by people enjoying BBQs in Fridays sunshine.

Group member, Louise Tambini, said,

“We are so lucky to live in the beautiful city of Cardiff, rich with Green Spaces. It is great that people come out in the sunshine to enjoy the wonderful parks, and good to see that the majority of people did try to put their waste in or near bins.

However, there was  lot of waste discarded irresponsibly. If only everyone who enjoyed the parks disposed of their waste correctly. A number of bins had obviously caught fire and patches of grass had been burnt, so I plea to people to act responsibly and ensure you do not damage the park in any way”

“We are proud of our city and want it to look its best for locals and visitors alike”, she added.

All waste was immediately removed by Cardiff Council Parks Services.

Event 146: Trenchard Drive (7 May 2017)

30 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group took a trip to Llanishen today to tackle the awful fly-tipping in the stream running through the woodland that surrounds the estate.

Volunteers spent 2 hours clambering up and down the banks to retrieve 50 bags of rubbish and approximately 4 tonnes of larger items.

They collected lorry tyres, carpets, car wheels, supermarket trolleys, a huge amount of treated and laminated wood (eg, fencing, cupboards), bathroom suites, pipes, vacuum cleaners, bags of clothing, lots of general bags of household rubbish and a mountain of discarded furniture.

Group committee member, Louise Tambini said,

I simply don’t understand why some residents don’t dispose of their waste correctly! The woodland is a wonderful habitat that is unfortunately being blighted by illegal tipping. Such a shame people don’t value their local environment and ruin it for everyone else.

It was lovely to speak to locals who were very grateful for our efforts. One lady offered us drinks and use of her facilities, another was an avid bird watcher and explained how she enjoyed watching the wildlife use the woods.

We also met a lady who litter-picks the estate and will now sign up as a Keep Wales Tidy Litter Champion – they are setting an excellent example. I just wish other residents followed their lead so we wouldn’t have this problem”.

Cardiff Council Parks Services will collect and dispose of the waste.

Event 143: Pentwyn Leisure Centre (5 March 2017)

Cardiff Rivers Group braved hailstones as they ventured to Pentwyn to clean up the woodland, park and green spaces surrounding the lake.

As part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Spring Clean Cymru’ campaign, the team collected over 50 bags of rubbish. They also retrieved a mattress, shopping trolley, traffic ones, numerous bikes and trikes, a crutch and other larger items.

Whilst there was a lot of waste collected, the volunteers were pleasantly surprised by how clean the area was compared to previous visits.

Publicity officer, Louise Tambini, said, “It was great to see so many new faces here today! Spring Clean Cymru really has brought the people of Wales together to clean up their local green spaces. I can’t believe so many volunteers turned up today in such horrid conditions – it goes to show just how much people care about their environment. They are true litter heroes!”

All waste was disposed of by Cardiff Council Parks Service.

Event 142: The Great Taff Tidy at Llandaff Rowing Club

For our next event we will be taking part in the Keep Wales Tidy (KWT) ‘Great Taff Tidy‘, a series of activities that are taking place from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 February. Hopefully, you will have seen the posters on display around the city near to where events are being planned. Thanks to our close links with KWT, we bagged Llandaff Rowing Club, as it’s the only spot on the Great Taff Tidy with a bar!

The activities we will get involved in will be varied, but will depend on how low the river level is. If it rains the night before, we may have to limit our scope.

As well as litter-picking both sides of the river, north and south, and provided the weather is good, the rowing club will kindly supply a boat so that we can cut back some of the overhanging branches that collect the litter and make the Taff look a mess. The waders team will take on the rubbish south of the weir.

With all the advertising, and given the interest we’ve experienced so far, we should get a good turn out so that we can really blitz the area.

For anyone that fancies a well-earned drink afterwards, the bar at the rowing club will be open from 12:00 and they will be putting on a BBQ for us, so be sure to bring some cash with you for food and drink.

Event 141: Fairwater Park

Saturday (21/01/17) saw really good turnout of around 35 people, who enjoyed a bright & sunny, if rather chilly, morning.

We collected two “tipper” truckloads of filth and Dave is very happy with the scrap he collected, including 3 bikes, a battery and a record player, half a shopping trolley and a road sign.

Other finds included an 8ft palette, a mattress, a network router and a boxing glove (singular).

A lot of work was done unblocking the streams and removing fallen trees.

There were numerous things that made this event a good ‘un:

  • Cardiff Parks support
  • At least 10,000 steps for those with ‘Fitbits’
  • Ice breaking. The lake at the top of  the park was completely frozen over.
  • Mud to wallow in.
  • Blockages to remove.
  • Sawing-up of fallen trees.
  • Bushes to trim.
  • Scrap to sell.
  • A local councillor — Lisa Ford — who ran a mobile surgery during the event if you could catch her.
  • Help from the local ‘Friends of The Dell’ group
  • A sniffer dog!
  • A new recruit — Hywel — who thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
  • 9 people in the pub afterwards!

Event 137: Llandaff Weir

26 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group made quick work of the litter in and around the river Taff at Llandaff Weir today, Saturday 29 October

In just over an hour and a half the ‘litter locusts’ had whizzed along the riverside and collected 23 bags of rubbish. They also found traffic cones, scrap metal, a mattress, road signs and some bikes.

Group committee member, Louise Tambini said,

“Our volunteers are amazing – even though it was raining, 26 volunteers turned up to help remove litter from this lovely stretch of river. They zoomed around and were struggling to find any rubbish after an hour! It’s quite funny watching them race each other to collect the litter!  What a great way to explore Cardiff, watch wildlife, make new friends, have a chat with like-minded people and make a difference to this lovely part of Cardiff”

More photos from the event can be seen on the CRG Flickr page.

Event 132: Ball Lane, Llanrumney

A great deal of rubbish was removed from the Rhymney and surrounding areas at Ball Lane on Saturday (27 August) by the stalwart volunteers of CRG.

The “upstream team” collected a total of 26 bags of general rubbish, plus a trolley, bin, bike and assorted detritus.

Meanwhile, the “far away gang” removed a large amount of garbage from the river — the usual shopping trollies, tires, trafffic cones and miscellaneous bits of metal.

All-in-all, a fantastic effort in just 2 hours!
