Parc Coed y Nant, Pentwyn (4 May 2022)

19 volunteers spent a gloriously sunny spring morning cleaning up Parc Coed y Nant (behind Pentwyn leisure centre) — around the lake and green spaces, and up-and-down Nant Glandulas, the stream that flows through the parc down to the Rhymney.

Together, they collected 39 bags of rubbish and the usual larger items items., like traffic cones and bike tyres. They also cleared several large blockages from the stream.

Event 155: Pentwyn Leisure Centre (11/11/2017)

Saturday 11 November saw twenty-five stalwart volunteers clearing up the lake, stream, paths and woodland around Pentwyn Leisure Centre.

There was a huge haul of litter and fly-tipped rubbish — 7 scooters, 3 bicycles, a child’s tricycle, 2 traffic cones, most of a motorbike, the inevitable shopping-trolley, a house sign, a playground seahorse (no, really), plus 30 bags of assorted refuse (mostly drinks cans & bottles).

We stopped work at 11am to observe the 2 minutes silence in memory all those who lost their lives in conflict.

A few volunteers had their endeavours rewarded by the sight of a kingfisher flying like an iridescent turquoise bullet up and down the stream behind the leisure centre. (Sadly, no photo.)

And after all the morning’s hard work, Lord Mayor couldn’t resist having another little sit down (thankfully a rather drier one than the last one)…

Our next event will be on Saturday 9 December, when we’ll be clearing up the dock feeder behind the Park Plaza hotel.

Event 143: Pentwyn Leisure Centre (5 March 2017)

Cardiff Rivers Group braved hailstones as they ventured to Pentwyn to clean up the woodland, park and green spaces surrounding the lake.

As part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Spring Clean Cymru’ campaign, the team collected over 50 bags of rubbish. They also retrieved a mattress, shopping trolley, traffic ones, numerous bikes and trikes, a crutch and other larger items.

Whilst there was a lot of waste collected, the volunteers were pleasantly surprised by how clean the area was compared to previous visits.

Publicity officer, Louise Tambini, said, “It was great to see so many new faces here today! Spring Clean Cymru really has brought the people of Wales together to clean up their local green spaces. I can’t believe so many volunteers turned up today in such horrid conditions – it goes to show just how much people care about their environment. They are true litter heroes!”

All waste was disposed of by Cardiff Council Parks Service.

Event 118: Pentwyn

On Sunday 6 December over 20 volunteers took part in a wide-ranging clear-up around the Pentwyn leisure centre.

A large amount of litter and debris was cleared from the stream behind the leisure centre, which flows down into the Rhymney. Litter removed included three shopping trolleys, two bicycles, a green recycling bin (no, really), and an artificial Christmas Tree, including lights (not working).

Several blockages, formed by fallen trees and branches, were also cleared, helping the stream flow more freely.

And a huge amount of litter was removed from the vicinity — not only the usual  bottles, cans, crisp packets and such-like, but also some sacks full of domestic waste (including soiled nappies!) that were dumped next to a public footpath rather than being disposed of responsibly.

In total there was enough rubbish to fill two flat-bed trucks.

All-in-all, an extremely worthwhile two hours of work… followed by a well-deserved pint!
